Last year, the Royal Wedding captivated people from across the globe who sat glued to their TV sets as Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, floated gracefully in to Westminster Abbey in a stunning wedding gown. Now, the lady behind the spectacular wedding dress is set to receive one of Britain’s highest civilian awards, an OBE (Order of the British Empire). Sarah Burton, creative director at Alexander McQueen and mastermind behind the Duchess of Cambridge’s iconic look, joins Emma Hill of Mulberry in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Burton, who has previously won prestigious awards such as the ‘Designer of the Year’ at the 2011 British Fashion Awards, took over the position of creative director at the international fashion house in May 2010. She has designed for several style icons including Lady Gaga and Michelle Obama, but the acclaimed wedding dress for the Duchess of Cambridge remains her most famous creation yet.

Designing the Duchess’s gown was an “experience of a lifetime”, said creator Burton. The stunning dress, which has become one of the most sought-after creations across the world, features a lace appliqué bodice and skirt.

Burton, from Macclesfield, Cheshire, said: “It was such an incredible honour to be asked, and I am so proud of what we and the Alexander McQueen team have created. I am delighted that the dress represents the best of British craftsmanship.”

Burton, who joined Alexander McQueen as an intern in 1996 while it was still operating out of a tiny studio, soon proved her worth and was promoted to head of womenswear for the brand. Soon after, she was promoted again to become McQueen’s personal assistant. After McQueen’s suicide, Burton took over the creative directorship to lead the company through financial uncertainity to critical acclaim, pushing out successful collections one after the other.

Alongside Burton, creative director of luxury British label Mulberry, Emma Hill, will also be honoured with an OBE. Hill, who joined the brand in 2008, is the recipient of several awards, and has recently helped the company secure a 54 percent jump in profits.
